Evelyn Jacobs Thompson

January 21, 1922 ~ November 15, 2018 (age 96)


Evelyn Jacobs Thompson, 96, passed away peacefully at River Landing at Sandy Ridge on Thursday, November 15, 2018.

Evelyn was born in Salisbury, NC. She was married for 50 years Walter Woodrow Thompson who died in 1993 and was daughter of Albert Franklin Jacobs and Emma Florence Barger Jacobs. She is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Thompson Brockmann and son-in-law, Charles of High Point; grandson, Thompson Brockmann and wife, Cybele; granddaughter, Julia Brockmann; and two great grandchildren, Katherine Brockmann and Helen Brockmann.  Evelyn was predeceased by five sisters Geneva, Edith, Ruth, Kathleen and Margie and her only brother Dalton.

Evelyn is a graduate of Boyden High School and Salisbury Business College. Prior to her marriage to Walter she worked in Salisbury’s nicest department store, Oestreichers. After eloping with Walter

to York, SC she moved to Tucson, Arizona. Walter was an Airforce sergeant at Davis-Montham Field and Evelyn worked as a “Rosie the Riveter” building B-17 Flying Fortresses. The couple returned to Salisbury NC where Evelyn enjoyed being a mother and homemaker. She loved to cook, garden, play bridge, and was an active member of Franklin Presbyterian Church. She and Walt retired to Emerald Isle, NC where they enjoyed fishing and making new friends. After Walter’s death she moved to High Point, NC, made new friends, bought her own house, cooked for everyone, played bridge, and became an active member of First Presbyterian Church. During this time of her life she loved to travel. She took her granddaughter, granddaughter-in-law and daughter to London. She cruised to Alaska with her daughter and son-in-law. She took her granddaughter Juli to Italy and went to visit her grandson when he lived in the Netherlands. Her most exciting adventure was chaperoning the senior high youth group from First Presbyterian Church on their heritage trip to Scotland and Zurich. She lived at River Landing at Sandy Ridge for 10 years where she continued to happily make friends, cook, and play bridge. Evelyn was a loving wife, aunt, daughter, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, and great grandmother.

A memorial service led by Dr. Kenneth Broman-Fulks will be held in the first floor living room of the Muirfield Assisted Living Building at River Landing at Sandy Ridge, 1575 John Knox Dr., Colfax, NC 27235 on Sunday, November 25, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. Interment will occur later at Rowan Memorial Cemetery where she will rest beside her beloved Walter.
