Lloyd “Rick” Giles was born in, NC, on July 20, 1946 to Lloyd Sr and Dorothy Gulledge Giles. He lived in Ruby, SC, until age 6 when his family, including older sister Marie, relocated to Topeka, KS. Rick graduated from Osage City High School where he distinguished himself in athletics. There was no sport Rick couldn’t play with aplomb.
Rick joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1965 “because he didn’t want to get drafted into the Army”. He was awarded a Bronze Star during his service in Vietnam.
Upon return from Vietnam, he was recruited from Camp Pendleton by the Los Angeles Police Department. He was appointed to the Department on Nov. 3, 1968. He worked two patrol divisions before becoming a Command Pilot in 1974. Rick had 17,000 flight hours when he retired from LAPD’s Air Support Division in Nov. 1998.
Rick spent his post retirement years immersed in the sport he loved – Golf. He traveled as far as Hawaii to play the best courses. He worked part time at TPC-Valencia “so he could play the private-pro course”. He played very well and was much loved by staff and club members alike.
There was not a kinder, calmer, more humble and giving soul, than Rick. He loved his children deeply. He was a Gentleman in the truest sense of the word.
He is survived by his daughters Marlena Limon, Melissa Giles, Valery Giles, Valery’s mother Monika Queen and his stepson Michael Thiffault, as well as 7 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild, and a host of nieces & nephews.
He will be dearly missed by many, forgotten by none. Always in our hearts and now in God’s Kingdom
