Eleanor Ann Rosen Bartholomae Liebowitz

February 26, 1933 ~ February 8, 2021 (age 87)

Eleanor Ann Rosen Bartholomae Liebowitz was born on February 26, 1933, to Rose and Sol Rosen. She grew up in a 3rd floor apartment in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn’ She had one sister, Susan who was 7 years older.

Eleanor was a very bright child and always excelled in school.

At age 16 she met her husband to be, Bill Bartholomae, also of Bensonhurst. He came from a German/Italian family, Salvatore and Fay Drioli.  Eleanor was welcomed with open arms into their lives. With them she loved to celebrate Christmas and Thanksgiving, Bill’s mother was a terrific Italian cook and loved Eleanor very much.

Eleanor and Bill had three children, Billy, Carol, and Barbara.  She was so very proud of her children and boasted about them to anyone who would listen.  When they were little, she’d play the piano for them, or play musical records like “Peter and the Wolf”.  They would all dance and sing around the basement.

Marriage to Bill ended in divorce in 1978.   She was a very independent, determined woman who would sit at the kitchen table smoking a pipe, just because she could.   She decided to go back to school when her kids were little. She earned her associates degree, then BA, and then went on to Graduate School at Stoney Brook University where she earned a Ph.D. in English and analytic certification. From there she went to NPAP, The National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis and after eight years she earned her certificate to become a practicing psychoanalyst.

Two years after her divorce she met the love of her life, Jerry Liebowitz. The two of them loved to go sailing on his little sailboat.  They also went to the beach to take long walks on the boardwalk. They traveled to Jerusalem with friends, took elder hostel classes together and thoroughly enjoyed each other’s company. Jerry could always make her laugh. Jerry passed away when he was almost 90. She would miss him for the rest of her life.

She lived independently for many years, but overtime developed dementia. She still always knew who her children were.

Eleanor left this earth on February 8. 2021.
