Obituary

Fred Brauns, 84, beloved husband, father of 5 and “Opa” of 12, passed away peacefully on September 15, 2020. His wisdom, guidance, and sense of humor will truly be missed by all who loved him. He was the first in his family to be born in America to parents Franz and Magdalene Brauns and grew up in Michigan and Florida. After graduating from Clearwater High School in 1954, he earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering in 1958 from the University of Florida and then entered the U.S. Army as a 2nd Lieutenant and Assistant Post Engineer, stationed at Fort Eustis in Virginia for 6 months and received an honorable discharge. He returned to the University of Florida and received a Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1961. He moved to NJ to start his career with Bell Labs to work on TELSTAR, the first satellite communications network and joint project with NASA. His job transferred him to NC in 1978 where he managed programs for Western Electric/AT&T until his appointment to President of Lucent Technologies Services Co. in 1991 where he served until his well- deserved retirement in 1997. As hard as he worked in his career, he always made time for his family and his favorite hobbies. He was an avid gardener, supplying the family each summer with an abundance of fruits and vegetables, as well as a woodworker, winemaker and fisherman.

Fred was predeceased by his parents; his 4 siblings, Hildegard Bourlier, Luise Cox, Annemarie Berry and Frank Brauns; his first wife, Rosemary Morgan Brauns; his son, Brian Brauns; his granddaughter, Shannon Rose Hurley. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Judith Brauns of Greensboro, NC; daughters Laura Brauns Hurley (Tom), Donna Brauns Brashear (Ron); sons Greg Brauns (Marcia) and Frank Brauns (Libby); grandsons Andrew, Derek, Cameron and Tyler; granddaughters Hilary, Miranda, Kristen, Reagan, Alana, Gabrielle and Madison. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on September 25th, 2020 at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 2200 North Elm St., Greensboro. Interment at the columbarium will immediately follow the funeral mass.
