Michael William Bowles died at 1 am, Thursday, September 22, 2022, at Beacon Place in Greensboro, NC. He died from pancreatic cancer which progressed into metastatic liver cancer. He was 73 years old.
Michael was born June 8, 1949, in Durham, NC. He graduated from Southern High School in Durham in 1967. Michael attended North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC from 1967 to 1969. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army for 2 years, from 1969 to 1971. Michael was stationed in South Korea. After being discharged from the Army, he attended North Carolina State University from 1971 to 1973. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in December 1973.
Michael worked for Blue Bell in Tupelo, MS from 1974 to 1976. He then attended Mississippi State University from 1976 to 1978, graduating with a Master of Science degree in May 1978. Michael worked in Newport News, VA from 1978 to 1980 at the shipyard. He then worked at ITT Grinnell in Kernersville, NC from 1980 to 1982. From 1983 to 1992 Michael worked at Hercules in the New River Valley of VA. From 1994 to 2005 he held several jobs in Greensboro, NC before retiring in 2005.
Michael took up scuba diving in 2000. From 2000 to 2018 he took scuba diving trips to the Caribbean Sea 2 to 4 times a year most years during this period. His favorite places to scuba dive included Bonaire, Curacao, and the Cayman Islands. Michael liked Costa Rica as well, to where he took several trips from 2006 to 2011. His favorite destinations within the United States included Arizona, Utah, Wyoming, and South Dakota.
Michael Bowles was predeceased by his wife, Emily Sutherland Bowles, his father, James Benjamin Bowles, Sr., and his mother, Violet Lucille Crabtree Bowles. He is survived by his son, Jason Michael Bowles of Greensboro, NC, his daughter, Susan Bowles, of Raleigh, NC, a brother, James Benjamin Bowles, Jr. and his wife, Elizabeth Frazier Bowles, of Greensboro, NC, a sister, Brenda Bowles Evans and her husband, Benny Evans, of Durham, NC, and a sister, Judy Bowles Cannada, and her husband, Drew Cannada, of Efland, NC, a niece, 2 nephews, 2 great nephews, and a great-niece.
