Tommie Howard

August 18, 1940 ~ September 19, 2022 (age 82)

Obituary

Tommie Howard, Sr. was born on August 18, 1940, in Evergreen, Alabama, one of six children to Mr. Stallworth and Bertha Howard Errington. He was educated at JVillo School in Evergreen, Alabama, and Tolmsville School in Mobile, Alabama. Growing up, he spent his days daydreaming about gaining more education but knew “working the farm" as a family joint effort was needed to make ends meet. Tommie’s mom wanted so much more for her children, so she led the journey in preparing a new place to establish family roots in Omaha, Nebraska. Tommie joined his mom and siblings in Nebraska, but they did not stay long; they still wanted so much more as a family that they packed up again and followed their older brother, James Howard, to the Big Apple (New York City). Up North, Tommie Sr. perfected his crafts of management, organization and building by working in several roles. Tommie loved baking cakes from scratch. Anyone who had a chance to taste them was fortunate to taste some of the best. It all started when he worked for one of the greatest iconic coffee companies in the “Big Apple” (New York City), Chock Full O’Nuts. He had a chance to be trained directly by the VP, which happened to be The Great Jackie Robinson. The great Jackie Robinson trained him in a few business skills and also let him in on the secret to baking superb pies at the company. Tommie Sr. admired and enjoyed the wisdom and being in the company of the Great legend Jackie Robinson and was told the feeling was mutual. Tommie Sr. was inspired to give baking a try and it's been with him for life. Tommie Sr. paved some of the greatest highways in Omaha Nebraska as it developed from prairie to towns. He has been the superintendent of Building Management, Bus Driver, Bus Attendant, Home Builder & Home Improvement lead. He accredited his sharp mind, analytics skills and multi- project organization to being Gifts from only GOD.

Tommie was blessed with 5 beautiful children Cynthia Howard, Felicia Howard, Melissa Frazier, Tommie Howard Jr., Carol Black and  one through his current marriage to Elizabeth Comer Howard, Demetria Comer.

Tommie married his beautiful bride, Elizabeth Comer on June 24th in 1999 and they just celebrated their 23rd wedding anniversary.  Together they took big leaps of Faith by residing in three different states (New Jersey, Nebraska and now North Carolina.) They both have big hearts of giving and compassion and they enjoyed caring for each other and others. Together, they served as foster parents, bus drivers and bus aides. Anyone who really knew them would know that they grew into doing life together as the “dynamic duo”.  They enjoyed visiting with friends and family, especially their children and grandchildren. Everyone became spoiled very quickly by their multi- visits a year. The multiple travel trips were considered “easy breezy” because Tommie loved driving the open road and held records of arriving the fastest to every occasion. The grands would track his records and wait eagerly at the door when they knew they were getting closer.

If there was an annual award for “the most dedicated fishing hours” that award would be presented to Tommie Howard, Sr. because he had an anointing for fishing. For Tommie, fishing was more than bragging about a big catch. It was more about spending quiet time with Heavenly Father, gaining strength for the day and drifting down memory lane.

Tommie loved God and as he got older, he would often encourage others to “listen to the voice of God closely because the consequences of disobedience aren’t worth it.”

Tommie’s legacy lives on through his children, Melissa Frazier (Shawn Frazier), Tommie Howard, Carol Black (Jameel Black) and Demetria Comer. Tommie was blessed with fifteen grandchildren- Javon, Javonna,Monique, LaToya, Jeffrey, Deshae’, Elijah,Tkai, Genesis, Ariella, Meekhi, Jayceon, Connor, Landon, and Italy. Three great grands Jaeria Cynthiana, Darius and Elijah’s  Blessing.Tommie is survived by his in-laws Mance Comer, Wallee Comer, Yvette Comer, Althea Comer, Christine Comer, Elaine Donnelly (Danny), Regina Howard and Curtis Hughee.

Tommie was predeceased by his two older daughters Cynthia Howard and Felicia Howard, his four brothers and one sister- Hilary Howard, James Howard, Danny Howard, Othella Hughee and Willie Howard. He was a special uncle to a host of nieces and nephews, a godfather to many, a reliable friend, and most of all he loved God with all his heart, his wife with all his love and his family with might. Tommie will forever live in our hearts and memories as the “Fisherman” who could connect memorable life stories by the stillness of the water.

A funeral service will be held 12 PM Saturday, September 24, 2022 at Triad Cremation & Funeral Service, 2110 Servomation Road, Greensboro, NC. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
