William Franklin Meacham, III

September 4, 1963 ~ January 8, 2022 (age 58)

Obituary

William Franklin Meacham, III passed away peacefully while holding the hand of his wife, Diana Watts Meacham on January 8, 2022. Frank, or Raz, as he was known to his family and friends, was born on September 4, 1963, in Charleston, West Virginia to W. Frank Meacham Jr. and Carolyn Minogue Meacham both from North Carolina. Frank grew up in Prospect Heights, a suburb of Chicago, Il. Frank’s love of music was coupled by an ability to play almost anything by ear, be it Beethoven or The Beatles. He, like his hero Paul McCartney, mainly played bass and piano, but there wasn’t an instrument he couldn’t play. He wrote and performed his high school class song when he graduated at Wheeling High School in 1981.

The second passion of his life was history. He graduated from East Tennessee State University majoring in history and received his master’s in history from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. In the late 80’s he moved to Greensboro where he would enjoy teaching at the University level. He adored his students and always managed to work some music history into whatever class he taught. Being in Greensboro also allowed him to be closer to his maternal Aunt Bobbie, with whom he had a special relationship.

By the early 90’s, his immediate family had made it back to the south, so holidays were held together, birthdays were celebrated, music was played! One of the biggest celebrations took place in quiet: Frank and Diana eloped! Diana had truly made Frank the happiest man alive on November 7, 1995. Shortly thereafter, they brought Genghis Khan into their home. The beautiful black fur, green eyed feline held sway over his parents, who were there to serve him, as well as other fur babies who followed after.

Frank and Diana took many trips to the Bahamas, they cruised, went to New Orleans and basically lived a fantastic life without children. In 2003, they became Aunt Diana and Uncle Raz. This would happen five more times and each time he would be thrilled to be “the greatest Uncle alive.”

Frank is survived by his wife Diana, his brother Patrick M. Meacham (Raleigh) and his wife Sharmane; nieces Erin (18), Natalie (15), and nephews Sam (17) and Ryan (18 months). He also is survived by his sister Marian Meacham André (Oak Hill, VA) and her husband Jay; nieces Meredith (15) and Josephine (13).

…And in the end the love you take is equal to the love you make. -Lennon/McCartney
